Peanut butter goodies gone bad
Don’t eat another peanut butter cookie, cake, or anything else with peanut butter as an ingredient. That’s the advice of federal health officials, who are investigating a nationwide outbreak of salmonella which has so far sickened 470, hospitalized at least 90, and killed as many as six people.
The salmonella bacteria, the most common culprit behind food poisoning, causes severe diarrhea, cramping, and fever.Â
Peanut butter sold jars directly to consumers is believed to be safe, experts from the Food and Drug Administration said. Their on-going investigation is focusing on peanut butter paste and peanut butter sold to food manufacturers as an ingredient for their products. The specific plant under scrutiny, owned by the Peanut Corporation of America, is located in Blakely, Georgia. Although the plant passed its most recent inspection, salmonella contamination has now been detected there.
The Kellogg’s Company has already recalled 16 of its products in response to the outbreak, including Austin and Keebler brand products. Check your cupboards for peanut butter sandwich crackers, snack-size packs of Famous Amons peanut butter cookies, and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle peanut butter cookies. If you find them, toss them, along with any other processed foods containing peanut butter, for that matter, and avoid buying more until the outbreak is over.

Remember, the salmonella outbreak could affect your pet as well. It’s been found in dog biscuits and dog food, where the peanut butter comes from the same plant in Georgia.
